I've removed and reinstalled the ICS, protocols and adapters many times following the microsoft "How to troubleshoot internet connection sharing problems". I wonder if it's related to Registry and that even though I'm removing/reinstalling that some undesired setting is left behind. I'm drawing blanks.

I'm sure at some point I did something wrong because VISTA kept referring to ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) as having other computers hook to my laptop and letting them access the net via my laptop. Hell, I didn't want that. But now that I can't do any networking, I've read where ICS is also using a router.
